Anyone holidaying in St. Lambrecht will soon discover that our village has far more to offer than just stunning mountain scenery and beautiful walking trails. Right next to the Benedictine Abbey lies a very special place: the Abbey Gardens. Here, nature, history and regional cuisine come together in a unique way.
Experience the four elements

The abbey garden was designed around the four elements: earth, water, air and fire. Each element invites visitors to experience nature with all their senses.
Earth symbolises growth and fertility. Numerous herbs, flowers and medicinal plants thrive in the lovingly tended beds; these have played an important role in monastic culture for centuries.
Water brings life and tranquillity. Small bodies of water and the gentle lapping of the waves invite you to pause for a moment and enjoy the special atmosphere.
Air is all around you – in the scents of the herbs, the rustling of the leaves and the fresh mountain air of the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park.
Fire symbolises energy, warmth and transformation. It reminds us how something new is created from nature’s treasures – whether in the kitchen, in herbalism or in everyday life.
A paradise for herb lovers
The wide variety of herbs is particularly impressive. Many of them are grown and tended according to ancient monastic traditions. Information boards provide interesting facts about their effects, history and uses.
As you stroll through the garden, you’ll be greeted by the scent of mint, lemon balm, lavender, sage and thyme. Depending on the season, countless plants are in bloom, attracting bees, butterflies and other insects.
The abbey garden is therefore not only a lovely place to go for a walk, but also a source of inspiration for anyone interested in nature, health and local traditions.
Straight from the herb garden into the ice cream

A particular highlight is our partnership with the popular ice-cream parlour Eiszeit in St. Lambrecht.
Carefully selected herbs and edible flowers from the abbey garden are used to create some extraordinary ice-cream flavours.
This gives rise to creative, regional flavours that deliciously capture the scent and freshness of the garden. Anyone who enjoys an ice cream at Eiszeit after a visit to the abbey garden experiences nature with practically every spoonful.
It is precisely this combination of local produce, craftsmanship and culinary delights that makes St. Lambrecht so special.
Long Night in the Abbey Gardens – 14 August
One event you really must make a note of is the Long Night at The Abbey Garden on 14 August: Lange Nacht im Stiftsgarten am 14. August.
As the evening sun slowly sets, the garden is transformed into an atmospheric setting. Illuminated paths, music, local specialities and a varied programme of events create a very special atmosphere. Strolling amongst the herb beds, enjoying the summer evening and soaking up the historic surroundings of the Benedictine abbey – a day’s holiday could hardly end more beautifully.
Every year, the Long Night is a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors alike, and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the Abbey Gardens in a completely different light.
A day out for the whole family
The abbey garden is open to the public and is ideal for a relaxing stroll with the whole family. Children can learn about the four elements through play, adults can enjoy the peace and quiet, and plant lovers will be in their element thanks to the wide variety of herbs.
From the garden, you can also easily reach the impressive Benedictine abbey, cosy cafés and numerous walking and cycling trails around St. Lambrecht.
Our tip from Pension Lambrecht
The abbey garden is just a few minutes’ walk from Pension Lambrecht and, in our opinion, is one of the most beautiful spots in the village. We particularly recommend a visit in the morning, when the herbs give off their intense fragrance. Afterwards, it’s well worth treating yourself to a scoop of herb ice cream at Eiszeit or taking a leisurely stroll through the historic village centre. https://www.stift-stlambrecht.at/domenico/bietet-gutes/gartenwoche
